City:

  1. A city or town.

    A city or town.

The city as opposed to the countryside.

    A harbour or port.

    A coastal town.

In reference to a city, bandar is usually used in reference to modern cities such as that of Tokyo. With ancient cities such as that of Constantinople, it is the word kota instead that is usually used. This results in a differentiation in speech between the Rome of the modern age and the Rome of antiquity where the former is referred to as bandar Rome whereas the latter is referred to as kota Rome.

This word is part of false friends between Standard Malay and Indonesian due to shared etymology. The Indonesian usage can be seen in Indonesian bandar.
